On Thursday evening June 23rd, members of the Lindsay Rotary Club celebrated their 2010-2011 Rotary year and welcomed in 2011-2012 at the Lindsay Golf and Country Club! A meaningful time was held by all in attendance.

Following dinner a number of awards were presented: Paul Harris recognitions, Perfect Attendance, the Club's Vocational Service award and a special award to the Stewart family in memory of the late Walt Stewart.

Last evening (June 22) The Rotary Club of Washago and Area Centennial had a wonderful change-over event under the trees, in the back yard of the home of Janet Stead and Dan Herbert. For me, it was reminiscent of last year when both President Janet and I were about to take on our new Rotary roles. The year came and went quickly.

Last evening we witnessed the many successes that President Janet and the other members of the Club had during the year. Washago is a small (21 members) but very active Club that serves their community with enthusiasm and commitment. Congratulations to all their members, partners and friends.

Peterborough-Kawartha President's Dinner

Last Saturday evening (June 18th) members of the Peterborough-Kawartha Rotary Club celebrated the 2010-2011 Rotary year together at the Best Western Otonabee Inn. The theme was a carry-over from the Convention in New Orleans with a number of the attendees adorned in beads and other trinkets from the French Quarter! The evening commenced along side the river with drinks and appetizers, followed by a wonderful dinner. Speeches were kept to a minimum.

Matheson Rotary Club Celebrates it's 50th Anniversary

This past Friday evening, May 27th, 2011, members of the Matheson Rotary Club celebrated in great style its past 50 years as well as the life of one of it's founding members, the late PDG Floyd Hembruff. The event was held in the Civic Centre, a venue that PDG Floyd was very involved with for many years. The celebration cocktails and photographs of those present. Guests of the Club included a significant number of members of the community including the Mayor, members of the Hembruff family, Rotarians from neighbouring Rotary Clubs (Englehart and Timmins-Porcupine) as well as George Ovens and DG Dawn Straka. The Timmins Youth Orchestra Players played during the superb dinner and after a number of speeches, the Timmins All Star Jazz Band entertained the audience. JoAnne Barber was the MC for the evening. President Christine Heavens was presented RI's 50th Anniversary Certificate on behalf of RI President Ray Klinginsmith. The following day a golf tournament was held.

Now that we have been back in Canada for almost a week, I am finally getting around to posting a few more photos. Towards the end of the Convention over 100 persons from District 7010 met in the the Staybridges Suites Hotel for a Social that was arranged by DGN John Gordon and DGE Brian Menton. It was a huge success, thanks to both of you and all the Rotarians and partners who attended. Here are a few photos.

On Thursday afternoon George and I arrived in New Orleans. When we got to the Staybridges Suites, our home for the next 7 days. Members of my own Peterborough-Kawartha Club were already here celebrating the fact they were in this wonderful city.

New Orleans has much to share with tourists from across this globe. I understand we are 18,000. Rotary volunteers. Today our day started with an Interfaith Service; then after lunch we were entertained and inspired at the first plenary session.

Besides the flag ceremony, we heard more than 250 youth exchange students from the south central part of the USA perform, and heard Michael Martin Murphey sing the song that RI Pres. Ray used the words of over and over again about "cowboy logic".

Late this afternoon we as Governors had a reception with our President and each other. This evening Zone 24 Governors had dinner together at Olivers.

Home from Haiti, safe, sound and tired!

Yesterday morning at 2am after 21 hours on the road and in the air I returned to Peterborough. On this trip I purchased $5249.00 US worth of textbooks for the Marbial school northeast of Jacmel in the south of Haiti. During this trip I connected on a number of times with members of the Jacmel Rotary Club who can be our ears and eyes in their community.

Pres. Jean Joseph Forgeas and Pres.-Elect Joseph Abraham Comper would like to work with us on a number of needed projects. Within Jacmel water in the schools is no longer an issue. Current needs range from public latrines, to mobile libraries to computers in some of the schools.

I was particularly impressed with PAZAPA, a school for disabled children in Jacmel. They need play ground equipment for their children. Their former facilities were completely destroyed by the earthquake and they are now seeking funds from Plan UK, USA and Canada to build a new facility.

Ecole Vie de France with some 800 students was most impressive. Their educational standards are extremely high by Haitian standards. The school currently has grades from Kindergarden to Grade 9 and each year another new grade is added. This school desperately needs a computer lab. The school's faculty feels that with computer and other language (English and Spanish) skills their students will have a chance of succeeding in their choice of a profession or business.

I arrived in Haiti on Monday and after spending the night in the very busy capital city of Port-au-Prince of some 3 million people moved westward and south to the city of Jacmel.

The purpose of this week long visit was to purchase and distribute books for the 325 student school in mountains near Marbial with funds raised through the Polar Plunge, my Peterborough-Kawartha Club and a DSG, and to explore the possibility of doing one or more Club or District projects with members of the Jacmel Rotary Club. What I have seen and learned speaking with a variety of Rotary members and others in this country is interesting. Everything is not quite as it has been portrayed in the media.

Haiti's Future

I am still here for another four days with visits planned to schools and another orphanage. I have now learned there are at least 3 orphanages in Jacmel! When I get home, I can better portray what I have seen with photos. I am also prepared to visit clubs starting in July to share my impressions, and ways that District 7010 Rotarians might be able to assist in this country that has suffered perils for many years.

This past weekend 48 RYLA youth, 8 junior leaders and 5 leaders spent a very busy weekend of learning and fellowship at a very accommodating YMCA facility (Geneva Park). The participants sponsored by 21 clubs had a tremendous opportunity to develop individual leadership style(s) and friendships with others from across
District 7010.

Each student was required to complete an on-line assessment questionnaire prior to attending. The results were provided in a comprehensive report from Price Associates. Our participants examined the four dimensions of normal behaviour. They were then able to identify where conflict can occur and where communication, understanding and appreciation can be increased. They developed their own Behavioural Style Action Plan.

Program facilitators were Dr. John Shewfelt (of AimingHigher) and Catherine May (Rotary Club of Barrie-Kempenfelt). Deb Watson is the RYLA Chair, and Alexa Wilson assisted. Both these leaders are Rotarians

The keynote speaker was Sunjay Nath, an internationally recognized motivational speaker. Sunjay’s message “Don’t Be Afraid to be the Only One Standing” highlighted the importance of being true to one self and an awareness of peer pressure. Sunjay also provided each participant with a copy of his book The ABCs of Student Leadership.

Geneva Park is a great facility. Participants enjoyed great food, and comfortable accommodation. YMCA staff also provided an afternoon of team building activities.

Another highlight of RYLA was the ’Coffee House’ on Saturday evening when RYLARIANS shared their talents in a variety of performances.
As DG, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a number of the students as well as the leaders. It certainly is a worthwhile program.

This past weekend, April 9th and 10th, 180 Rotarians from District 7010 shared learning and fellowship together in North Bay. Coming from as far in the north west from Hearst and in the southeast from Havelock in Ontario and Amos in Northern Quebec, Rotarians got the necessary presidential (PETS)and secretarial (SETS) training for 2011-2012, youth leaders got the mandated youth exchange training. The rest of us had time to hear and learn about all of the many Rotary programs: GSE, wheelchair distributions, public relations, Family of Rotary. public speaking strategies, RYLA, Rotaract, Interact, fund raising strategies, ClubRunner, First nations Projects, our District Mentoring Program, E-Club, Team Building, our District 2011 Conference and the New Orleans Convention.

Yesterday I completed the last of my official 2010-2011 visits up north in Val d'Or. The Club's President, Lucien Raby and Secretary, Veronique Raby, toured PDG Paul Beauleau, RI Coordinator and myself, DG Dawn Straka around town, citing a number of former Rotary Projects. Val d'Or has been a mining town for over 75 years. The citizens are very proud. This is one of a number of statues of minors we saw in town.

Following an executive meeting where we learned about of a number of the Club's community projects and their other activities, we met the rest of the members. We learned this Club recently recruited 3 new members and are in the process of recruiting 1 or 2 others.

Yesterday the Rouyn-Noranda Rotary Club had a very full meeting. Besides their usual business, AG Claude Hubert, RI Coordinator Paul Beaulieu and I, DG Dawn Straka spoke to members of the Club and their guests. In fact this is my 3rd visit to this Club with in a year. The first was in relation to our Conference before 2010-2011 started and to spend time with incoming AG Claude Hubert; the second visit was George's and my attendance at the Club's 60th Anniversary Celebration; and yesterdays visit gave me an opportunity spend time with the Club's Executive, speak about general Rotary matters and catch up on the Club's status.

I asked RIC Paul to come along for this and the Val d'Or visit to help portray in French the most recent thinking about what it means to be an active Rotary Club and to solicit some thoughts as to how our District might better support them . There was some excellent discussion.

Springwater Township Rotary Club celebrates its Chartering

Last evening the members of the Rotary Club of Springwater Township celebrated the Club's recent charting at a lovely celebratory event with a number of Rotarian guests, Community dignitaries and family members present. Stephen Wilkinson was the Master of Ceremonies and has been working with this club since it's inception in the capacity of Club Extension Co-ordinator. Steve has been fondly titled this Club's "Godfather".

Wilf Wilkinson, a Trustee of The Rotary Foundation and a past Rotary International President was the guest speaker. He focused on some of the experiences he had as he traveled abroad with Rotary and where Rotary is in today's world. MP Helena Guergis, MPP Jim Wilson, MPP Garfield Dunlop and Deputy Mayor Dan McLead all brought greetings from their constituents and their offices. President Brenda Stanley received the Charter document, the Club's bell, gavel and banner on behalf of all the members. In turn all charter members and 5 other recently admitted members were given a certificate, name tag and a folder of Rotary Information.

Chartering evening of the Collingwood Interact Club

Last evening George and I had the honour of attending the Chartering Ceremony and Fundraising Dinner of the new Collingwood Interact Club. This Club, that actually started meeting late last year, was sponsored by 2 Rotary Clubs: Collingwood and Collingwood South Georgian Bay. The whole evening was a real success with many Rotarians, parents, siblings and friends of the Interactors present.

Although there was not a final count of revenue, it was felt the evening brought in enough donations and revenue for the Interactors to buy 2 shelter boxes. All involved in the formation of the club and the celebratory evening certainly deserve much credit. Good wishes for years of continuing success!

Rotary District 4240 celebrates the 2010-2011 Rotary year (Part 1)

DG Mario Andino from District 4240 invited George and me to attend their annual conference that celebrates a successful Rotary year. We met with and had some wonderful times with fellow Rotarians and spouses from all 4 southern Central American countries: El Salvador, Nicaragra, Costa Rica and Panama. The sessions were comparable to ours and portrayed their initiatives. Not only did we sit in on all of their sessions but it gave us an opportunity to discuss future potential joint ventures between the 2 Districts.

This past week George and I spent some wonderful times with our Rotarian friends from El Salvador in District 4240. This photo was taken after we sat in on a WCS meeting with some of the members of the San Salvador Rotary Club. They are in the process of doing a review of their 2010-2011 activities and planning for the up-coming Rotary year.

These 3 Rotarians (Juan, Manuel and Jean Paul) will be remembered well by the team of 39 Canadian Rotarians who participated in the distribution of 1400 wheelchairs late in 2008.

This evening I had my first glimpse of the recently constructed Rotary display unit that was purchased using Rotary International Public Relations and District monies. This very attractive and versatile unit will be used by all 3 Rotary Clubs: Peterborough, Peterborough-Kawartha and Bridgenorth Ennismore Lakefield. It is anticipated the unit will have a number of different applications related to the sharing of information about Rotary. The front panels can be changed depending on the current use.

District 7010 Leaders meet to plan for Rotary 2011-2012

For the last couple of days, a group of District 7010 Rotarians met in North Bay for District Team Training under the leadership of PDG Tom Bennett, the District Trainer.

The first day was dedicated to the Assistant Governors who are now ready to start their pre-PETS meetings with President-Elects, Secretaries and in some areas for Treasurers.

The second day concentrated on updating those present with the exciting new theme for 2011-2012 that encourages us all to "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity". In my view this concept connects so well with our current theme that describes what Rotary does: "Building Communities; Bridging Continents".

Last year I introduced a new organizational structure at the District level (based on the Leadership Plan) and for the last 8 months it has been tested. A part of yesterday morning was spent discussing the roles & responsibilities of the various leadership positions and Committees. It is recognized that further work is needed and we were each challenged to define our own areas of responsibility.

While in North Bay we also had a Finance Committee meeting and an abreviated (catch-up) District Advisory Council meeting. My sincere thanks goes out to all my fellow Rotarians who invested their efforts and ideas into what I believe is advancing Rotary in District 7010. I came away feeling the Team members are strong, committed and prepared to explore newer ways of communicating and working together.

Caro, my Club's Exchange Student and I traversed the field and bush behind my Peterborough area home earlier today. It was sunny but cool and windy! Students like Caro who come with an open mind to experiencing life in a new country to the fullest flourish. Caro arrived exactly one week ago from 30*C. temperatures. I predict Caro will have a wonderful year.

This afternoon a team of 4 Rotarians and our recently arrived Youth Exchange Student from Argentina jumped into Chemong Lake at the Bridgenorth Ennismore Lakefield Rotary Club's annual Polar Plunge. In spite of 6" of snow over night and a light dusting of snow at the time, the temperature was between -1 & 1*C. The Team raised approximately $3500. in pledges to be shared with 2 different school projects in Haiti. Thank you Rotarians and friends across District 7010 who supported us.

Peterborough area Rotary Clubs are hoping to charter a new Rotaract Club

Last evening, in spite of the remnants of a snow storm that closed many schools and businesses, a group of Rotarians (representing the 3 Rotary Clubs in Peterborough area) and a small group of potential Rotaractors met. The purpose of Rotaract was described by a former member. Opportunities for fellowship and to develop leadership skills, participate in community and international service projects and do something to make the world a better place were described. The next meeting will be held at 7 pm on February 17th at the Splice in Peterborough. All interested area youth 18-30 years of age are invited to attend.

Rotary District 7010 Advisory Council, Executive and Transition Meetings

After an early morning drive for a few of us and for the rest a conference call, twenty-four Rotarians met to review the status of the District. The Advisory Council (DAC) members meet 3 or 4 times a year to recommend financial and other administrative actions on behalf of our District 7010 membership of 1699 Rotarians. Following that, still by conference call the Executive met to review the work of the DAC and to make the required motions The third meeting we had was planned to assist in the transition for our recently appointed Acting(DGE) Brian Menton. The District organizational chart for 2011-2012 was reviewed.

The four of us who met in person appreciate the fact we could gather at the Neibert's home. We thank both Barb and Bob.

BEL Rotary Club celebrates the Holiday Season

Last evening members of the BEL Rotary Club celebrated Christmas and the holidays at the home of Rotarians Susan, Tony and Courtney Davidson. A few guests of the Peterborough-Kawartha Club were also present.

Besides appetizers and beverages appropriate for the season, there was a simple auction of 5 items in aid of the End Polio Now campaign, an exchange of useless gifts and music and a carol sing by some of the members. A really pleasant and relaxed time was had by all!

Last Saturday evening Santa Clause came to Peterborough at the end of a long parade. Members of the Peterborough-Kawartha Rotary Club joined together with another 80 community groups making it a very successful and well attended event. Ahead of time Club members spent hours preparing the float depicting story time. Young folk reading huge story books under snowy arches rode on the float driven by PE Morgan Smith and accompanied by President Ash Kaushik.

In spite of the snow holding off, it was cold! Club members followed the float carrying banners regarding the Club's Christmas Book Program and Christmas Auction.

On Monday evening November 21st members of the Wasaga Beach and Area Rotary Club had a wonderful celebration of their many good works in the Wasaga Beach area. The event was held at the Wasaga Sands Golf and Country Club,a venue well decorated for the forthcoming holiday season.

The Wasaga Beach Town Cryer Roy Wilson, his wife Kay, President Marilyn and her Board members ensured that member's service of the last 4 months was well recognized.

Not only were a number of Paul Harris recognitions given out but Club service recognitions were also given to another members. One new member Darryl Quick was inducted.

On Thursday November 18th, the Rotary Club of Peteborough-Kawartha held it's 14th Annual Paul Harris Dinner in celebration of Rotary Foundation month. Five individuals received Paul Harris Recognition: one for each of our Avenues of Service. PDG Tom Bennett was MC for the event. President Ash Kaushik chaired the meeting.

On Wednesday evening, November 17th, I visited the Rotary Club of Springwater Township together with PDG Carl Dickson and AG Marilyn Hanson. Club Extension Sub-Chair Steve Wilkinson, who has been mentoring this Club for months, was also in attendance. Besides the warm welcome we extended to everyone present, we presented the Club with the Club plaque, the 4 Way Test Banner and make-up cards and each member, including President Brenda, with her/his Rotary pin. While there, I gave my "official" talk using a PowerPoint slide show. There was good discussion.

Although this Club was officially chartered on the 13th of October, they will not be having their celebration event until late January or early February, 2011.

This morning I had the honour of visiting the Rotary Club of Orillia Lake Country. I was so very surprised to see my grand welcome!
During the meeting I had the honour of presenting Scott Showers with his 9th Paul Harris recognition. Scott is a strong Rotarian who has also been District Secretary for a number of years. Patti Bailie, a new Rotarian was also inducted into the Club today. What a great day!

Bridgenorth Ennismore Lakefield Rotary Club is very proud of the Bridgenorth Rotary Trail

On Monday evening the Board members of the BEL Club spoke passionately about the Rotary trail linking Peterborough and Bridgenorth. It is anticipated the trail will eventually link up with Lakefield. The Bridgenorth trail was officially opened this past summer.

This Rotary Club has determined that recruitment of new members is a priority; a number of persons have expressed an interest. President David is encouraging all current members to support this initiative.

Ramesh Ferris spoke at the Rotary Institute in London

Ramesh Ferris, VP of the Rotary Club of Whitehorse Yukon was one of the last speakers last Saturday afternoon. Ramesh was born in India, had Polio as a 6 month old infant, was placed in an orphanage and then adopted by the Ferris family in Whitehorse. After many surgeries, much rehabilitation and loving, he is able to stand with one brace and one crutch. Ramesh is a remarkable young man: He cycled his way across Canada from British Columbia to Newfoundland and has since been over to India where he found his birth Mum and the orphanage he lived in. Ramish has now joined the ranks of Rotary and is continuing his own journey to free our world of Polio. Congratulations Ramish; your approach to our cause is remarkable.

Rotary Zones 24 & 32 Institute finishes on a high note!

On Saturday evening (November 13th) Zones 24 & 32 finished our 3 day Rotary Institute in London, Ontario. The next Institute will be in Boston in August 2011. The Institute gives leaders in Rotary an opportunity to share, learn and plan in relation to our own roles and responsibilities with Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation. On Saturday evening just before the banquet, our group of Zone 24 DGs and partners met briefly with RIP Ray Klinginsmith. See the photo above.

The Institute also recognized Districts that supported the International Convention in Montreal with 5 or more Rotarians attending from each of their clubs. I picked up a plaque on behalf of PDG Richard Levert.

During the last 2 days for DGEs and the last day for DGNs have been going through their own rigorous training for the next phase of their Rotary responsibility. This evening Bob Neibert together with 36 other DGEs from Zones 24 & 32 received their certificates having completed the 2 day GETs (Governors Elect Training) program.

Earlier today 37 DGs met to discuss their role to date in that position. PDG John Tomlinson was one of our facilitators and PDG Bryn Styles lead discussion about The Rotary Foundation.

Last evening the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach and Area held this year's gala Crystal Ball at the Country Club at Wasaga Country Life. Congratulations for an elegant and fun filled evening go to Patricia Baty, her Gala Committee and Marilyn Ruttan, President 2010-2011 of the Club.
The dinner was beautifully presented, entertainment and music kept everyone busy and the silent and live auction items dazzled us all, tempted us and eventually lead us to the payment line! All in all it was a great evening. At the same time revenue from the event will help Rotary "build the local Wasaga Beach and area community".

A second Foundation Seminar is held in Rotary District 7010

Yesterday 40 Rotarians from across the southern part of District 7010 spent just over 4 hours learning about and sharing information about the Rotary Foundation. Program leaders were PDG Ron Strickland, PDG Reid Asselstine & DGN John Gordon. Discussion centered around the Humanitarian, Educational and Polio Plus Programs and the various fund generating programs the Foundation. Individuals raised their own issues of concern, particularly about accessing matching grants. AG Joyce Campbell handled administration for the day. Participants all felt the day was most helpful and agreed to take the information they had just learned back to their own Clubs.

At the end of the session, AG Joyce received a Rotary Bequest Society crystal recognition piece and pin for her recent generous donation & commitment to The Rotary Foundation.

Parry Sound Rotary Club

On the banks of Georgian Bay this Rotary Club has a strong and long history of service going back some 74 years. After a hiatus, this Club is again interested in youth and if possible would like to host both a Youth Exchange and STEP program person. With support they are about to start the recruitment process. This Club is also interested in going through the District visioning process.

On Tuesday, November 2nd George and I had the opportunity of visiting a number of their community projects: the hospital, a playground area, the walking/hiking path and the theater. The photo to the right of George, me and a number of their members was taken immediately after the meeting.

On Monday of this week I met with the Rotary Club of Sudbury Board members regarding their Committee work, then with the whole membership at their regular noon-time meeting. Both meetings went well. There was a lot of discussion about a perspective WCS project in India. This Club portrayed a real interest in both the Youth Exchange and the STEP programs. Sudbury's current YE student Tontoey Ruangprasertkul from Thailand celebrated her 18th birthday at the Club meeting with a surprise cake and many good wishes.

While we were present the Club also honoured Chris Coulombe, a volunteer with the Sudbury United Way who is involved with engaging and developing youth leaders.

This morning during the regular meeting of the Barrie-Kempenfelt Rotary Club 12 persons, representing 8 community partners who participated in the selling of tickets for the Club's Beaverfest, were present.

Last evening I attended this Club's Board meeting where each of the Executive and Directors reported on their area of responsibility. At that meeting AG Joyce reminded members of the forth-coming Foundation Seminar for area 6 Club members (and other Club members further afield, as well) November 6th in Midland. There is also space on the El Salvadorian Friendship Exchange and possibly space on another Exchange to District 7490 in New Jersey.

Minden Rotary Club had an excellent turn-out at it's regular meeting

In spite of this being Municipal Election Day in Ontario, the Minden Rotary Club had a full house this evening. President Dennis chaired both the executive and the regular meetings.

The Dominion Hotel, where the Club now meets, was bustling with activities. Many patrons had come out to get the election results and to share in the associated activities. With 18 members this Club is very active. Their goal is to increase their membership by 3. Their major community commitments are to their Hospital, the River Walk project(downtown development & beautification program), the Minden Hills Library (the furnishing of Rotary Room) & the Minden Hills Play Station. They also do seasonal activities like Christmas food baskets and put in a float into the Santa Clause Parade. The club also expects to get involved with Winterfest 2011, (Ontario Senior Winter games) February 15-17 in Haliburton County.

Yesterday PDG Ron Strickland (Chair TRF), PDG John Tomlinson (Grants Chair) and GSE Chair Sandi Campbell spoke and lead discussion for over 4 hours about the reasons why Rotarians and Rotary Clubs support our Rotary Foundation. The Humanitarian, Educational and Polio Plus programs were clarified as was the matching grant system; the need for Foundation fundraising was explained.

Some 25 Rotarians from across the near north were in attendance. AG Wayne Arnold coordinated the session. The next such seminar will be held in Midland on November 6th.

Rotary Club of Lindsay

Today I visited the Lindsay Rotary Club, met with the Club's Executive and then I shared lunch and the rest of their weekly program. This was my official visit. President Dave runs a good meeting and delegates well. As with a number of other Clubs membership is an issue and President Dave has some plans to bring in a number of new members. He also wants to ensure efforts are directed to new member retention. Today a number of members were away working on the collection and recycling of electronic equipment in the Lindsay/Kawartha Lakes community.

Englehart: A very Proud and Active Rotary Club

Thanks to members of the Rotary Club of Englehart citizens of the town and area have resources and facilities often only available in larger communities.

Yesterday Joan and Mike King toured us around to many of the Club's projects of the last few years located in the arena, hospital, library, museum, schools and at Centennial park. In addition, the Club spends $5,000. annually for needy families at Christmas time, gives bursaries in the schools, supports a variety of youth activities, has an active Interact Club and donates to Polio Plus and international projects like Ryan's Well and the District 7010 Wheelchair Project.

George and I were also able to reconnect with Rotary friends, past Assistant Governor Lynne and Glen Hueston. In the evening we were greeted warmly by President Susan Hack, Club members and guests in a banquet hall decorated in a harvest theme for their "Governor's Dinner". A pleasant time was had by all.

Rotary Club of Haileybury members serve the area

For the past 82 years members of the Haileybury Rotary Club have been serving the area. With members from New Liskeard in the north to Latchford in the south they do a variety of individual and community service projects. Recruitment of additional members to do all they want to do continues to be an issue of concern to the members.

Last Thursday I had the honour of meeting with the Executive and then George and I met with the membership and guests of the Rotary Club of Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island (some 185 km west of Sudbury, Ontario between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron). This Club currently has 12 members but their primary goal is to build it's membership over the next 6 months. While in Gore Bay we visited Rotary Park and Beach and spent time at the Medical Centre, a facility that has been supported by this Club since its founding some 25 years ago.

At noon-time today, nearly 200 members of 13 Rotary Clubs and 1 provisional Club met together with staff and guests of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, Ontario to celebrate the construction of a home for persons from the hospital's catchment area who need accommodation while receiving treatment for their cancer illnesses. It is anticipated the building project will take just over a year.

Twelve of the Rotary Clubs present donated very generously (over $1.5 million) to the Rotary Place project. Rotary Place will have space for administrative offices, the Family Medicine Teaching Unit and a lodge for cancer patients and their families who travel to Barrie for cancer treatment from out of town. Because of this degree of support, the home will be called "Rotary Home". Today's event, a regular Rotary meeting for those in attendence was lead by Bev Morgan, President of the Rotary Club of Barrie-Huronia and Eric Dean of the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation.

While travelling through north-western Quebec, we spent some quality time with Lucien and Veronique Raby, two leaders of the Val d'Or Rotary Club. Lucien and Veronique's mission was to deliver a cheque to the staff of the community centre for families. Recently, up to ten Rotarians did a community hands-on project where they were able to take a room at the centre and renovate it into a kitchen and then supply it with all the equipment and supplies the centre needs to commence the project. We look forward later this year to return to this community to do the official DG visit. .

Last evening members of the Rotary Clubs in north-western Quebec celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Rouyn-Noranda Club. Both Rotarian Jean-Charles Coutu (a former lawyer who worked in the far north of Quebec) and I had the honour of speaking to the guests. As well 2 Paul Harris recognitions were given out: one to Cecile Grenier, a very active community member and Rouyn-Noranda Rotarian Gerald Vezina.

Rotary's contribution to nature!

The Rotary Club of Amos in north-western Quebec has a variety of humanitarian and community service projects. Following our official visit to this club on September 30th, my partner and I had the opportunity of viewing and visiting a number of the projects of Amos Rotarians. Because of the uniqueness of their local wild animal refuge, we were able to view injured Canadian wild life, some very rare, who were injured, have been rescued, nursed back to health and where possible returned to the wild.

Obviously, this is an attractive project that serves much of the province of Quebec but this club also out-reaches to the people of Amos with their drop in centre for teens, the hockey arenas and teams they support, their centennial park and fountain, and the downtown clock.

Conference 2010 in Rotary District 7010 has come and gone with flying colours!!

A very successful District Conference happened this past weekend in Peterborough. From Thursday's Annual Golf game (that escaped the rain), an Afternoon of Caring (a District service project at 4 different United Way supported agencies) and musical entertainment thanks to PDG Sue Cook and her Band; through colourful opening ceremonies, guest speakers including Tom Jackson (Actor, Musician and Chancellor of Trent University), Dr. Chris Furgal (Professor, Indigenous Environmental Studies at Trent University) and Zoe Caron (Author, Activist, President of the Sierra Club); our Rotary International President's Rep. Jennifer Jones; Home Hosting on Friday evening; to the many other Rotary oriented programs (Youth Exchange, GSE, TRF, COL, Rotary projects, etc.)

During the Conference we also celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the 1st Rotary Club in Canada with homemade birthday cake and ice cream for all.

Two other highlights were the Catch the Dream Gala on Saturday evening and the Celebration of Life of 18 deceased Rotarians and 2 partners on Sunday morning. Besides these more formal events, there was time (usually in the wee hours of each night) for friendship.

All in all it was a very successful Conference with participants better informed, engaged, excited, and ready to get busy with Rotary causes after catching up with sleep and getting on with the rest of their lives. A very sincere thank you goes out to Kim Winter, Conference Chair, her Conference Committee members and all other volunteers who worked so diligently to make it all happen. It will take many hugs to show everyone how what they did is valued!!

An Outstanding Rotarian is Honoured

At their regular noon meeting today, Willard J. Chapman of the Rotary Club of Peterborough was awarded with the Avenues of Service Citation. Willard, a resident of the beautiful Canterbury Gardens where the meeting was held, received the unexpected award for his numerous volunteer activities related directly and indirectly to his being a Rotarian for the last 45 years. Willard served in many different roles in all five Avenues of Service at both the Club and District level. At the Club level he was Club President, GSE leader to Australia, YE Counsellor, and the chair of a number of committees including the 1981 District 7010 Conference committee. At the District Willard was a District Governor Rep. for 1 year and District 7010 Treasurer for 10 years. In Peterborough Willard also sat on a number of Boards including that of St.Joseph's Hospital Foundation; he was also a Big Brother and founding member of the revitalized Camp Kawartha on Clear Lake and a supporter in the founding of Five Counties Childrens' Centre. The award came as a complete surprise and well deserved honour to Rotarian Willard.

North Bay Nipissing Rotarians: Leaders in Motion!

Yesterday, in spite of heavy and continuous rain, President Lynn and DG Dawn visited the waterfront area of North Bay. This Club's past commitment to the area and their interest in it's future was most evident. Their city has a waterfront renewal project and there are a number of potential ways this club could be involved. Presently the Club has a committee studying a small number of potential major projects and preparing a report for their Board and the rest of their membership. The attached photo was taken in front of the City's plan for the waterfront development.

During the Club meeting a new flyer "Rotary, Humanity in Motion" was shared with the members. It sustinctly depicts the work this Club does in their community.

Official Visit to Moose Country--Chapleau, Ontario

Today on our way through to Chapleau, we experienced a rare sighting of a white moose grazing quietly in the ditch by the side of the road. We were later told by local Rotarians that this was rare as most had never seen one but knew that a few exist in the Foleyet area.

This afternoon we visited some of the projects of the Chapleau Rotary Club. To the left is the fish tank they bought for the children's section of the public library as part of a literacy project supported by a District Simplified Grant. This is a program where young children come to the library for the children to read to the fish or else be read to by their parents & caregivers in front of the fish.

This evening following the executive meeting and the official visit a photograph was taken of the members of the Chapleau Rotary Club together with DG Dawn and George. Tomorrow there will be more project visits. This is a small but very community oriented and committed Club!

On Saturday, September 11th, the application for the chartering of the new Rotary Club of Springwater Township was signed and has been sent to Francoise Garcia, Supervisor of the Northern Pan American Club and District Support Team at Rotary International. It is expected that we should hear within the next few weeks as to this provisional Club's new status.

The recent chartering of the Innisfil Rotary Club is celebrated!

Last evening some 125 Rotarians and their families and friends celebrated the recent chartering of the new Rotary Club of Innisfil on June 17, 2010. At the semi-formal Gala, the 22 charter members and another 2 post charter members were formally inducted and congratulated by Past District Governor Richard Levert, President Shawn Gannaw and myself. In a large and tastefully decorated room at the Innisfil YMCA (the usual meeting place of the Club) members received their certificates and badges, then together with their guests celebrated with music, dancing, food and beverage. A number of gifts, presented by the other 43 clubs in the District, included their brand new bell, gavel and banner. For all present it was a night to be remembered!

Rotary Club is dedicated to the Bracebridge Community

The Bracebridge Rotary Club has done a number of remarkable projects in the town of Bracebridge. Today we were fortunate enough to visit their Rotary Centennial Gardens. A very beautiful site in the heart of the city, this garden of huge pine trees, perennial flower beds connected by pathways, with an entrance pavillion, benches and an event or entertainment pavilion and some water features is available for use by the public. President Margaret is standing near the natural stone signage for the garden.

A second impressive project of this Club is their Rotary Centre for Youth used by a number of youth groups for their weekly meetings. The Club also meets there weekly. Today I had the honour of presenting Past President Nancy Cox-Godfrey with her 2nd Paul Harris Recognition pin during their Club meeting.

Innisfil Rotary Club is about to be officially chartered!

Last evening and this morning I attended the new Innisfil Rotary Club's executive and membership meetings. Needless to say, with their Chartering Gala happening on September 11th, discussion focused on that event as well as my visit. What I found at both meetings was responsibility, enthusiasm and energy with their plans well underway for the event. It was most encouraging to see how engaged the 22 charter members and 2 other persons (about to be inducted) are. My guidance to them reflected upon what is important for a new club: recruit but make sure everyone gets engaged with responsibilities meaningful to them. I also suggested it will take time for their new Club to gel and that down the road strategic planning needs to be considered.

This new Club meets at the Innisfil YMCA on Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30 am with coffee: they have chosen not to have a full breakfast. Everyone in District 7010 wishes them well!

The vibrant Rotary Club of Orillia

Sometimes actions speak louder than words! Yesterday I spent 4 hours with a number of members of this vibrant and very effective Rotary Club. When I asked the Directors what they were passionate about they said everything and that was so evident when we reviewed their list of initiatives, programs and activities.

Besides attending the Board meeting and regular Club meeting for my "official visit", George and I had the opportunity of visiting two of their major initiatives, (the outside of the new Rotary Place, a community recreation centre [a joint project of the 2 Orillia Rotary Clubs] and the extension to the Orillia YMCA) and a number of their older services to the community. The Rotary Club of Haliburton has been a very strong supporter of the redevelopment of the area of Haliburton Village along the water front of Head Lake. From the huge old CN railway engine that the club maintains through the park and its shelter to the children's area of the public library, this Club has been involved! There is also a remarkable display area of Rotary memorabilia in the rear of the caboose tourist area; well worth a visit.

Visiting the projects with AG Brian and President Richard before the Board and official meetings gave great meaning to the strength of this Rotary Club. They also have a "Fun Building" and "Growth" project called the "Clubs of Four", conceived by Past-President Jim Miners that is well worth sharing.

Collingwood South Georgian Bay Rotary Club

On the evening of September 1st, I visited with members and attended the meeting of the Board of the Collingwood South Georgian Bay Rotary Club, at the home of President Lorne. That meeting dealt with some administrative matters and prepared the way for my official visit the next morning when President Lorne and I had the privilege of inducting four new members and presenting a Paul Harris recognition to one of their members. For the first time in their history they have 50 members. This year this Club is 10 years old; I am assured there will be a celebration!

Midland and Penetanguishene Rotary Clubs support The Rotary Foundation

On September 1st, a beautiful warm and sunny day, the Rotary Clubs of Midland and Penetanguishene hosted close to 100 golfers at their anual Rotary Foundation Golf Tournament at the Bonaire Gold Course located south of Coldwater, Ontario. A number of local Rotarians worked the course. The revenue from the day is divided by the 2 Clubs and goes to support Rotary's Polio Plus Program.

From Peterborough to Penetanguishene: Two active Rotary Clubs

President Moe chaired the Board and regular meeting of the Peterborough Rotary Club. Following a very full agenda and busy meeting (including my official visit and talk to members of the Club) a group of Rotarians met to discuss plans for the International Convention in New Orleans next May. It seems that a number of members are very interested in attending; some because of the tremendous time they had in Montreal.

Salvadorians last day in Canada

The Salvadorian Friendship Team members with their hosts in Peterborough just before we left for Niagara Falls on their last part of their journey to Canada .

We had lunch at Elements overlooking the Falls...for George and me it brought back memories of Conference 2009!

Returning to Toronto and the Carlingview Hotel, I heard many very positive comments about the exchange participants: "Everything was perfect; our host families opened their homes and their hearts to us, like we were old friends; Even the weather cooperated; We learned much about your country and the way you live; We got some fundraising ideas and discussed some potential service projects."

Fenelon Falls Rotary; a vital part of their community

Since 1944, the Fenelon Falls Club has been serving the citizens of their small community; as well they have participated in a number of international projects. President Joe, pictured to the left, supports increased membership recruitment and retention activities. Already this Rotary year he has recruited and inducted a new member to the club.

A couple of years ago Rotarian Andy completed the District's Leadership Academy with the assistance of his wife. Andy, in the middle of the photo to the right, is visually impaired. His wife claims they both are appreciative of how much they learned about Rotary from the course.

They are currently looking for a new international project; a few suggestions were made. A number of members will be attending Conference 2010 in Peterborough; they are hoping it will be at least 10% of their membership.

Wasaga Beach Rotarians entertain Salvadorian Friendship Team members

In the rain following the annual Corvette car rally in Wasaga Beach, President Marilyn and the members of the Wasaga Beach Rotary Club entertained the 12 Salvadorian Friendship Team Members at a BBQ on the bank of the Nottawasaga River. Great fun and superb hospitality was had by all.

Later that evening At the home of Elizabeth, President Elect, banners were shared by members from two Clubs in San Salvador and Wasaga Beach.

Rotary Friendship Team from El Salvador visits District 7010

Last evening 6 Rotarians and their spouses from San Salvador in El Salvador, Central America arrived at Pearson International Airport for a 10 day visit as guests of Rotarians in District 7010. The idea for this exchange grew out of friendships developed at the time of the 2008 District 7010 Wheelchair Project in El Salvador. At that time 39 Rotarians from Canada worked together with El Salvadorian Rotarians in 3 communities to distribute 1400 chairs to elderly, disabled and young Salvadorians who had no other means of obtaining their own wheelchair.

While in central Ontario the guests will be hosted in Midland & Penetanguishene, Wasaga Beach, Barrie, Orillia area, Bracebridge and Peterborough area. Their trip will end with a visit to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake. AG Joyce Campbell from the Rotary Club of Midland has coordinated the Team's stay. The picture to the left is of Jamie & Celina Fuente, Joyce Campbell and Rafael & Gloria Grammattei. They arrived on the first flight.

In the picture to the right are the 4 Rotarians and spouses who arrived 2.5 hours later. Team members in this second group are DG Mario Andino and his wife Fantina, Napoleon and Nelda Henriquez, Gustavo and Angelica Chavez and Juan Ramon and Carolina Molina. It is anticipated that a return visit to El Salvador will happen this coming winter by some of the Canadian hosts.

North Bay Rotary: the second largest Club in District 7010

Besides visiting three of this Club's major projects, I was fortunate enough to participate in both the induction of a new member Brett Tucker, (the brother of President Tom Tucker) to the right and the presentation of the certificate and pin to a new Paul Harris Fellow, Rotarian Bill Hagborg, to the left. This is a very generous Club that has given over the past 87 years to a great variety of community and International causes. This club also owns a wonderful piece of property on the shore of Lake Nipissing which is currently being used by the Y for a day camp for children. The Directors are strategizing what to do with "Camp Tillicum".

This is the practice and philosophy of the Rotary Club of Kapuskasing. Some Rotarians may call it their recipe for success. New members are mentored and periodically PDG Bert presents an education program for his fellow Club members. Rotarian Mabel Brown is their Membership Chair; she is totally committed to membership growth. She also bakes and shared cupcakes with her fellow Rotarians. President Sandra, to the right, is preparing for the business part of their Rotary meeting. This Club also has a very high level of fellowship both inside and outside of it's weekly meetings.

This very active french speaking Club in northern Ontario is most committed to serving the children and youth of Hearst and area. Under the leadership of President Carole and her committed fellow Rotarians, the Club is doing well with it's membership of 38 and a variery of projects in spite of an economic downturn in the area due to a drop in lumber exports. Matheson, Ontario: A small but dynamic Rotary Club

This small Rotary Club in northern Ontario plays a vital role in their community. Founded in 1961 they have for years maintained their Rotary Park and Trail & provided scholarships, bursaries & playground equipment. Next April they will be celebrating their 50th anniversary.
This photo was taken at the home of President Christine Heavens and her husband John following a delightful BBQ. Also in attendance were Rotarians JoAnne Barber, George Freundlich and Darrell Pettefer.
While in town, DG Dawn spent time visiting with PDG Floyd Hembruff (1992-93) in the Matheson Hospital. PDG Floyd is a charter member of the Club, was very pleased to get an update of what's happening in Rotary in District 7010 and sends his wishes to all his fellow Rotarians.

Sudbury Sunrisers Rotary Club share their plans for 2010-2011

At a recent Board and Club meeting the members of the Sudbury Sunrisers shared their plans for this Rotary year with DG Dawn. As President Jeff says "All Sunrisers will be actively involved in the 5 avenues of service, will be aware of our past accomplishments, engage in our current initiatives and have participated in developing our future goals." This year is this Club's 20th Anniversary. President Jeff has assigned the task of planning the celebration to a committee of Club leaders. Havelock Rotary Club is very committed to community service

The Rotary Club of Havelock, located in the town of Havelock in the southeastern part of central Ontario last evening had their official Governor's visit . Besides time for a social, the club had a buffet dinner, the Governor's speech and the distribution of cheques to recipients of three local agencies and services: the Five Counties Childrens' Centre; Trent University's Breast Cancer Research and Smitty's Christmas Wish (a local food hamper program). In her speech Governor Dawn reminded the members she sees her role as a "friend, supporter and fellow Rotarian " and that she "wants to see all Havelock and other Rotarians enjoying Rotary and inspired and empowered to take on bigger and better service challenges."

A Weekend of Rotary Fellowship

On Friday evening (July 16th) members of the brand new Innisfil Rotary Club had a BBQ at the home of one of their members, Susie Parker. A good time was had by all including DG Dawn and her partner George!

Dinner was topped off with a very special ice cream cake.

This new Rotary Club will be celebrating it's recent chartering with a Gala on September 11th , 2010.

This year the Area 4 "Meet the Governor Event" was held near Huntsville, Ontario. The Rotary Club of Huntsville Lake of Bays hosted a BBQ on the bank of Fairy Lake. Members of several nearby clubs attended.

One of the highlights was the railway trip to and from the BBQ site. Another was our visit to the new campus of Waterloo University in Huntsville.

Official Visits to Collingwood, Midland and Barrie!

There is so much more to Collingwood than its wonderful skiing and golf! Here President Jim MacKeracher of the Rotary Club of Collingwood and DG Dawn are standing on a huge Rotary wheel (Collingwood's Centennial Project) facing the old grain silos. The waterfront is most interesting. This Club has a vast array of service projects.

First day on the job for President Phil Edmunds of the Rotary Club of Midland. Very strong fellowship and commitment to Rotary is most evident.

President Sue Shaw of the Rotary Club of Barrie also ran a very successful first meeting of the 2010-2011 Rotary year . In a meeting with the Executive and Board members very strong evidence was expressed towards the ideals of Rotary. There is considerable interest in establishing a sustainable (probably international) project.

Rotary Club of Washago & Area Centennial Changeover

Last evening the Rotary Club of Washago & Area Centennial in Washago, Ontario had a delightful changeover ceremony including a BBQ, Club meeting and year end celebration in a beautiful garden and wooded area.

Family members, guests and Presidents from a number of neighbouring Rotary clubs were in attendance. After President Doug Cooper and his Directors reported on their many successes of 2009-2010, he handed over the Chain-of-Office to in-coming President Janet Stead who briefly outlined her thoughts and expressed her enthusiasm for her new role in 2010-2011.

Rotary District 7010 Governors' Changeover

On Thursday evening , June 24th, District 7010 had a memorable cocktail hour, formal dinner and changeover celebration in Peterborough, Ontario at the Best Western Otonabee Inn. The evening was hosted by the Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha with the meeting presided over by President Ash Kaushik. PDG Tom Bennett was Master of Ceremonies. District Governor Richard Levert of the Rotary Club of Sudbury spoke about the District's many successes in 2009-2010 receiving from all those in attendance a standing ovation. Then incoming Governor, Dawn Straka was introduced by Kim Winter, a fellow Rotarian and Chair of the 2010 District 7010 Conference. DGE Dawn spoke enthusiastically about the many opportunities that lay ahead in the next 12 months and some of her goals. At the end of the evening DG Richard and DGE Dawn exchanged pins for the forthcoming year. DGE Dawn also gave DGN(D) John Gordon and DGE Bob Neibert their DGN and DGE pins and wished both of them well as they too take on more District responsibility.

Convention 2010 in Montreal was well worth while

This was my 8th International Convention and like all the others certain speakers, discussions, happenings and social events stand out as most memorable. There were approximately 18000 attendees from some 150 countries. District 7010 had more than 250 attendees. Attending an International Convention is a wonderful opportunity; from it one can gather a wealth of information. It is different from a Conference that deals with more local Rotary matters. Both have their place in our Rotary world, helping to prepare us to serve our fellow mankind. The Monday evening gathering at Les Trois Brasseurs was a real success. Thank you Dan Herbert and Ron Howell for organizing the event.

President John Kenny chaired the plenary sessions so very well, keeping the program moving ahead at all times. There was plenty of variety, some very serious matters, others light and entertaining. Here is s photo of Marc Durocher and Kim Giffin at one of the sessions. Today we were all awed by the fact that we are so much closer to finishing the Polio Plus Challenge with some $133,800,005. collected as of this week. The other good news is in relation to the much lower numbers of children coming down with the dreaded disease polio compared to this time last year. Dr. Bruce Aylward, director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative at the World Health Organization, encouraged us to share the "terrific" news that polio is on the run, and that Rotary’s vision of a polio-free world is within sight.

Next year, the International Convention will be in New Orleans. The Convention Committee and RI Directors put on a colourful show and video for the May 21-25th, 2011 event. Think seriously about joining your fellow Rotarians and let the good times roll again!

Sudbury to Montreal: a busy week of Rotary activities.

This past week I had the honour of meeting with the Friendship Team from District 3010 in Sudbury when DG Richard and Madeleine Levert hosted them at a well attended "Happy Hour" and Dinner. Rotarians and guests from across the near North were in attendance. The Team members have now returned home to the New Delhi area of India.
On Saturday my Partner George and I drove into Montreal and since then have had a memorable time at the Rotary International Convention. Over the next few days, information about the Convention highlights will emerge.

Club Change-overs are taking place across District 7010

Clubs across District 7010 are in the process of celebrating the efforts of their 2009-2010 Presidents and their Boards of Directors and welcoming in their new Presidents and Board members. On Wednesday evening the Bracebridge Rotary Club members celebrated their very active 2009-2010 Rotary year aboard the Wenonah 11, a very comfortable cruise ship that sails out of Gravenhurst on the Muskoka Lakes. Together with family and friends, members leisurely enjoyed dinner and drinks and heard from President Richard Borland how very well the Club and its members did in the name of Rotary. President Richard also warmly welcomed President-Elect Margaret Walton into the presidency come July 1, 2010.

District 7010 Youth Exchange Students visit Ottawa

Over the Canadian Victoria Day weekend, 29 Youth Exchange students and YE Committee members had a very full and focused three days in Ottawa. The 14 Inbound students and 15 (Canadian) Outbounds spent 2 whole days visiting the sites of Canada's capital: Parliament, The Museum of Civilization, and the Supreme Court to name a few. Time was also spent in more formal meetings like the "Jacket Ceremony" when the Canadian students received their new official Rotary jackets, and the 2010-11 pins of Rotary International and District 7010. During that event each student was asked to give a 2 minute speech in the language of the country he or she is going to for the next school year. They were challenged but did very well. Towards the end of the weekend the In-bound students (from Europe, the Far East and South America) discussed what it will be like and their feelings about going home after spending a year in Canada. Except for those going on the East Coast Trip, some may not see each other again. Certainly the visit to Ottawa was one of many highlights of the students Rotary year in Canada.

Bridgenorth-Ennismore-Lakefield Rotary Club honours two members

On Saturday evening, May 8th, the BEL Rotary Club held their annual International Dinner at the beautiful Gallery on the Lake near Buckhorn, Ontario. To the complete surprise of the members, two Rotarians were honoured for their dedication to their Club and to the Rotary Foundation. Ruth Kuchinad received a Paul Harris pin and certificate naming her a Paul Harris Fellow while Tony Davidson, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow received a pin with 2 sapphires. Both members were urged to wear their new pins as a symbol of their appreciation and support of the programs of the Rotary Foundation.
